I would creep into the caves on the island looking for dragons! (Laughs) That was really the foundation of the How To Train Your Dragon series. ![]() And in the absence of television or any other form of entertainment, the stories that my dad told me about Vikings and dragons really fired my imagination. Vikings really believed that dragons existed. This part of Scotland was also the first place that the Vikings came to about 1,200 years ago. ![]() It was just us on the island and the house had no electricity. When I was nine, my dad had a house built on the island and we would spend the whole summer there. It was an incredible experience for a child to be camping out there. The books are set in a fictional Viking world, and focus on the experiences of protagonist Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, as he overcomes obstacles on his journey of 'becoming a hero, the hard way'. ![]() There was no electricity and no houses and obviously no phones back in the 1970s. How to Train Your Dragon is a series of childrens books written by British author Cressida Cowell. you could see the sea from every corner of it. What that meant for the family, ever since I was a baby, was that we were packed off to an uninhibited island off the west coast of Scotland and picked up from there two weeks later. My dad was an environmentalist and he loved the wilderness. I grew up in London because my dad’s job was in London. ![]()
